Rookie Defenseman Esa Hulkonen is having a great rookie season for the Riga Trieciens!

He is one of the league leaders in hits with 33 through 12 games and probably has even more now but his stats are uncertain. He has 10 assists also to go along with his 33 hits and rumor has it he even scored a goal recently. As it stands in the stats through 12 games, rookie Esa Hulkonen has 10 assists, 33 hits, 9 shots, 6 pims and an Even rating. A great start to this young rookies career in the LSHL. We assume this is one of the best rookie seasons anyone is having right now. We know Esa's former Piebalgas teammate Tonijs Montana is have a nice season also. Esa and Tonijs are front runners for rookie of the year at this point in the season. There could be another couple players in the mix but Esa is not aware of them.

Coming into the season, management in Riga was uncertain what Esa Hulkonen could do in the LSHL. They were concerned he may be too young or too slow to compete with the pro players after playing just one year in the minors, but Esa surprised everyone! He has been one of the top defenseman this year for Riga and is playing many important minutes. His physical game has been a welcome addition to their blue line and his offense has been a boost to their scoring. Esa Hulkonen is clearly on the path to stardom in the LSHL. He was an excellent pick in the 1st round for Riga and he is paying off for them bigtime. He should become one of the most physical and gifted defenseman in the LSHL over the next few seasons and will help Riga win the cup. Esa Hulkonen has arrived!
